Tuesday, October 15th at 2:00pm – Collage Art with Sandy
Patrons can produce their own, one-of-a-kind aesthetic with collage art form, taught by Sandy. Supplies are limited, so please register in order to attend.

Monday, October 21st at 11:00 a.m. -- Japanese Cooking
Are you interested in learning how to make Japanese sushi? A Japan Outreach Initiative Coordinator from the Asia Society Texas Center will demonstrate how you can make your own sushi. Japan has a rich food culture, and you will be able to learn some Japanese food culture through this program.

Wednesday, October 23rd at 1:00 p.m. – Preserving Home Media
Do you have shoeboxes of old pictures? Old home videos on VHS? Super8 or 8mm video reels from last decade? Are some of your old pictures starting to fade?
Join us for a special presentation on preserving your home sources. Come learn what to do (and not do) to preserve your pictures, documents, memorabilia, and media so they last more than just a lifetime! We’ll also include a demonstration of our new Preservation Pad equipment that can help you better preserve and share these memories for years to come.

Monday, October 28th at 11:00 a.m. – Japanese Tea Ceremony
Japanese tea ceremony is harmony between people and nature, respect for others, purity of heart and mind, and peace. If you learn about tea ceremonies, you might be able to understand the Japanese sense of beauty and feeling. This program is instructed by a Japan Outreach Initiative Coordinator from the Asia Society Texas Center.

Wednesday, Oct. 30, 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 p.m. – Children’s Trick-or-Treat Costume Parade
All children ages Birth - 6 years old and their adult caregiver are invited to join us this Wednesday for our annual costume parade. Children are encouraged to wear their "not too scary" costume and trick-or-treat the Central Library staff during the parade! Light refreshments and a take-home craft will be provided after the parade.
** We encourage parent involvement and require all adult caregivers to remain with their children at all times and for the duration of this event.

Computer Classes

Thursdays on October 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th, 31st from 11:00 am-12:30 pm – Tech Talk
Have a question about your computer, phone or tablet? How about how to use a Microsoft Office program? Come into the computer lab and ask Melissa for assistance.

Tuesday, October 1st at 1:30 pm – PowerPoint Part 1
This is the introduction to Microsoft® PowerPoint. The class will explain the main window, creating a presentation with or without a template, adding and editing text, graphics and tables in a slide, adding a new slide, changing the layout of a slide and saving your presentation. Tuesday, October 8th at 1:30 pm – PowerPoint Part 2
This class is for the intermediate Microsoft® PowerPoint user. You will learn how to add animation to you text and graphics on each slide, setting the transition from one slide to the next, setting the timing for your slides in your slideshow, moving and deleting slides, viewing your slideshow/presentation and creating, viewing and setting up a custom slideshow/presentation. Genealogy Events

Tuesday, October 8th at 10:30 a.m. – Beyond the Basics: Ancestry.com
Come our Genealogy Librarian for a class on getting the most out of your Ancestry.com subscription. We’ll cover aspects unique to a paid subscription account like building a tree, managing tree settings, using hints to find additional records, as well as extra tools available to paid Ancestry.com subscribers.

Friday, October 18th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:50 PM – 2019 State-Wide Genealogy Lock-In
MCMLS Genealogy will be participating in the 2019 Genealogy Lock-In. What is a Genealogy Lock- In? It is a day of genealogy programs that is put on by the Genealogy Network of Texas. Individuals in dozens of libraries across the state will all tune into a series of programs broadcasted over the Internet by experts in the genealogy field. The MCMLS Genealogy department will be providing live-streaming of several programs, with the Genealogy Basics class being taught live for our patrons by Genealogy librarian Carl Smith, while also being live streamed out to other participating libraries.

Thursday, October 31 at 1:00 p.m. – Graveyard
Come help us end October in style: Halloween Style! Attendees are invited to dress up in your Halloween costumes and join the Genealogy department to learn about utilizing death records, cemetery records, and funeral home records into their family history research.

Monthly or Bi-Monthly Events at the Library
First Thursday, October 3rd at 4:00 p.m. – Pre-Teen Book Group
All kids ages 9 -12 years old are invited to join us the first Thursday of the month September - May at 4:00 pm to discuss their favorite books. Select a title of your choice, book selection can be in text or audio format, and you can bring a 'visual' to help tell us about your book. You do not have to be finished reading your book to participate in the discussion. Come anyway! Book discussion and activities will be completed by 5:00 pm. We meet in the Children's Activity Room. Snacks are included! Please note: Adult caregiver will please remain in the Children's Department while your preteen is participating in the book discussion.

Second Thursday, October 10th at 11:15 a.m. – Toddler Playdate
Children, ages birth-3 years, are invited to Toddler Playdate to promote socialization and educational playtime for our youngest patrons. This program focuses on building blocks and building friendships, for both little angels and their caregivers! This program will be a come-and-go program and will last for approximately 1 hour. Parents and caregivers should be prepared to relax and meet other adults, while young patrons increase their socialization and play skills.

Second Thursday, October 10th at 4:00 p.m. - LEGO® and DUPLO® Fun
All kids ages Birth -12 years old are invited to join us the second Thursday of the month September - May at 4:00 pm to build with Legos and Duplos. Activities will be completed by 5:00 pm. We meet in the Children's Activity Room. Please note: Adult caregiver will please remain in the Children's Activity Room while your child is participating in this program.

Second Thursday, October 10th at 6:00 pm – Novels at Night Book Club
Join us for tea, snacks, and discussion in the first floor small meeting room every second Thursday of the month at 6:00 p.m. This October, we will read our Gulf Coast Reads winning novel, The Library Book by Susan Orlean. Ages 18+

Third Tuesday, October 15th at 3:45 p.m. – R.E.A.D. to the Dogs
All kids ages 4 -12 years old are invited to come and practice their reading skills with Pets With a Mission, Inc. trained dog teams on the third Tuesday of the month September - April at 3:45 - 4:45 pm! We meet in the Children's Activity Room. Free Book: the library provides (1) free book for every six books read with the PWAM dogs. Please ask for details when you arrive. Please note: Adult caregiver will please remain in the Children's Department while your child is participating in this program.

Third Thursday, October 17th at 4:00 p.m. – Pre-Teen ‘Boredom Buster’
All preteens ages 9 -12 years old are invited to join us for this afterschool program designed just for you! We meet in the Children's Activity Room. Check out Central Library’s website calendar for details. Please note: Adult caregiver will please remain in the Children's Department while your child is participating in this program.

Fourth Tuesday, October 22nd at 5:00 pm – Needlecraft: A Good Yarn!
Crocheters, knitters, spinners, and other textile artists are welcome for fellowship and conversation! Bring your own work-in-progress and supplies and join us in the first floor small meeting room at the Central Library.

Fourth Thursday, October 24th at 4:00 p.m. – Family FunQuest
Families with kids ages Birth -12 years old are invited to join in the Children's Activity Room us for this afterschool program. Spend some family fun time at the library listening to a story, making a take-home craft, and playing board games! Please note: Adult caregiver will please remain in the Children's Activity Room while your child is participating in this program.
