How To Properly Winterize Your Home's Plumbing
By: My Guys Plumbing Heating & Air | Published 12/26/2022
Winter is just around the corner, which means colder temperatures will try to creep into your Conroe-area home. While leaving your heat on at a higher temperature might be tempting, it’s not energy efficient and will leave you dealing with higher heating bills. Instead, you can take steps to winterize your plumbing to prevent problems.
OPEN YOUR SINK CABINETS
One of the simplest things you can do to protect your plumbing pipes is to leave your sink cabinets open. This can allow warm air from your heating system to get in and provide more heat to the pipes. Even a few degrees more warmth can make a big difference.
INSULATE COLDER AREAS
Piping in any areas of your Conroe area home that are typically cooler such as the crawlspace or attic should be insulated. This can help protect the pipes and prevent them from freezing and potentially bursting. You can also get heat cables as added protection and have a professional technician install them so that heat can continue reaching your pipes.
KEEP YOUR HEAT RUNNING
Even if you plan to be away from home during the holidays or any other time, it’s crucial to keep your heat running. Turning it off can lead to a freeze and a burst pipe inside your home. At the very least, your thermostat should be set to 55 degrees. If you have a programmable one, you can adjust the temperature right from your fingertips on your smartphone.
SEAL UP AIR LEAKS
Air leaks can cause your energy bills to rise because cold air can get into your home. Inspect all doors and windows to find holes or cracks and seal them with caulk and spray foam insulation. It’s a great way to winterize your home and save money.
