Texas Flag Lady: Pat Spackey, Honored by Texas Legislature
THE WOODLANDS, TX -- For many years, Pat Spackey, a.k.a. The ‘Texas Flag Lady,’ was a fixture at many events in Montgomery County, never afraid to speak on the ‘History of the Texas Flag,’ and giving accounts of Texas history to students and anyone who would listen. Ms. Spackey, who resided in The Woodlands, unexpectedly passed away last November, leaving the community in shock; missing her outgoing presence, her wonderful outfits and hats, and her glowing personality and beautiful smile. Pat was best known for being the great, great, great granddaughter of the designer of the Lone Star Flag of Texas and the first State Seal, Dr. Charles B. Stewart.
It was Representative Steve Toth, HD 15, who authored a memorial resolution to recognize Pat on the floor of the Texas Legislature on May 20th. She was very active in the Montgomery County community, and a member of the Montgomery Historical Society, the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
“Although she no longer walks with us, the warmth of her spirit remains, reflected in the legacy of the lasting impact on all who were privileged to know her,” said Toth. “Pat was a steward of Texas history, a tireless story teller, whose life was dedicated to the legacy of Our States proud past.”
Toth went on to say that Pat understood that history is not what is written about in books, but what we carry in our hearts. Her deep passion for Texas History was not only academic, but personal with her being a descendant of Dr. Stewart, a delegate to the Convention of 1836, and a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence.
“It was a wonderful presentation with my family in attendance,” said Pat’s widow Ted Spackey. “We are so proud of Pat with her new designation of ’a Texan of Historical Significance,’ which she most certainly earned with her hard work and dedication in promoting the Texas Flag and our history.”
Ms. Spackey had the honor to write the script about the monument to her ancestor Dr. Charles B. Stewart, at the unveiling of his bust during the Lone Star Monument and Historical Flag Park dedication ceremony on April 21, 2011. Representative Toth read the resolution to the legislature during the morning session with Pat’s family and several citizens of Montgomery in attendance. The event was streamed by the legislature, and will be archived.
“Pat was a beloved matriarch and an esteemed member of her community,” said State Senator Brandon Creighton in his Senate Resolution on Ms. Spackey. “She leaves behind memories that will long be cherished by her many friends and loved ones and by all who were privileged to share in her life.”
Rep. Steve Toth's Facebook post honoring Pat also declared her a ‘Texan Woman of Historical Significance,’ with many leaving loving tributes to the grand lady. Toth noted that Pat’s Texas legacy along with her signature hats, were brightened by her beaming smile.
“She was an amazing lady that radiated from the inside out,” said Margie Taylor. “She made everyone smile.”
