WILLIS, TX -- A spirit of excitement and pride filled the air on Sunday, October 26, as Willis ISD officially dedicated Homer C. Calfee Middle School — the District’s newest campus and a tribute to the life and legacy of an educator who shaped countless lives.

Led by Principal Dr. Gerald Schattle, the celebration featured heartfelt performances by Calfee Middle School students and moving words from District leaders and members of the Calfee family.

Before the ceremony, the Conroe/Lake Conroe Chamber of Commerce hosted a special ribbon cutting with members of the Calfee family and District officials, marking the official opening of the new campus and welcoming the community into its next chapter.

Board of Trustees President Kyle Hoegemeyer shared his pride in seeing the District’s vision become reality.

“This beautiful new school represents our commitment to learning, growth, and community,” Hoegemeyer said. “We’re grateful to the architects and builders for their care and craftsmanship — and most of all, to the teachers, students, and families who will make this campus come alive every day.”

Superintendent Dr. Kimberley James reflected on what makes a school truly special.

“A building becomes a school when people come together to create something greater than themselves,” said Dr. James. “Our teachers and staff are building not just a campus, but a community where every student is seen, supported, and inspired to succeed.”

Nancy Calfee, granddaughter of Homer C. Calfee, spoke on behalf of the Calfee family, sharing heartfelt stories of her grandfather’s lifelong dedication to education and his lasting influence on the Willis community. Kristin Calfee Bybee, great-granddaughter of the school’s namesake, followed with a meaningful presentation of the original bell from the historic White Oak School to Principal Dr. Gerald Schattle. Joining in the celebration were family members, including granddaughter Carol Van Alstyne, along with friends who gathered to honor the Calfee legacy.

The dedication of Homer C. Calfee Middle School brought together families, educators, and community members to celebrate more than a campus — it marked the creation of a new school family. With the support of its dedicated staff and community partners, Calfee Middle School is ready to inspire learning and connection for years to come.
