Children's Books on Wheels receives proclamation from Houston's Mayor Parker

CONROE, Texas –– Children's Books on Wheels Solutions for Communities VITA recently received a proclamation from the office of Houston Mayor Annise D. Parker.

The proclamation and a certificate of appreciation at the Federal Reserve Bank of Houston were awarded for the group’s “commitment to financial education of individuals and families” through its partnership with Houston Money Week 2012, according to the organization.

The Children’s Books on Wheels recently purchased an additional building next to its current location in Conroe.

Rita Wiltz, executive director of Children's Books on Wheels and Project Coordinator for the Solutions For Communities VITA Coalition free tax preparation program, said the group makes a difference for low-to moderate income families.

"We provided free tax preparation at over nine sites in the county, churches, apartments complexes, two colleges Lone Star College - Montgomery and Lone Star College - Tomball, the South County YMCA, Greater Houston Easter Seals, two banks, nonprofit organizations and New Caney ISD Annex. We are proud of our accomplishments which includes a 203% increase over last year,” Wiltz said. “In addition, CHIP, Medicaid, SNAP Food Stamp, and the Texas Women's Health Program along with other community resources snd referral services give free books to every child that attended the tax sites with their parents. Services were provided by IRS certified volunteers in four languages."

Lone Star College - Montgomery, one of the community partners with Children’s Books on Wheels, hosted the first Flash Mob location on the campus for the Houston Money Week Montgomery County Project.

“The Flash Mob was a historical event,” Wiltz said. “We moved to the music of Money Money. Our success is due to the support of dedicated volunteers, Entergy and the commitment of the IRS.”
