CONROE, Texas -- It doesn’t get more Texas than Bluebonnets, Tex-Mex fajitas, and Texas country music. On July 21, the community will hold a Texas-size benefit at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds for a local teenager just diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia. Amidst a field of Bluebonnets, is one lovely Daisie…Daisie Hilborn. Just as the spring flowers and Daisie were blossoming, she was diagnosed with AML, a rare disease that rarely affects teenagers. Daisie is just 14 years of age.

. In just the last 10 days since Daisie has been diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia, she has had two MRI's, one CT scan, x-rays, four lumbar punctures and spinal taps, bone marrow extracted, braces removed prematurely, taking between 6 to 10 pills daily, chemo twice daily, has had a pic line inserted, five platelet transfusions, and two red blood transfusions.

“Amazingly after all of this, this girl can still smile,” said proud grandmother, Marilyn Kasmiersky. “I have only two words for her...my hero!”

Daisie will experience the symptoms of fatigue, shortness of breath, easy bruising and bleeding, and because she has no immune system, she will be subject to an increased risk of infection. As an acute leukemia, AML progresses rapidly. Daisie will be undergoing aggressive treatment at Texas Children’s Hospital for a minimum of six months, but eventually hopes to rejoin her classmates at Montgomery High School where she will be a freshman, after she wins this battle.

To offset unexpected expenses, a benefit will be held for Daisie on July 21, at Montgomery County Fairgrounds from 12 p.m. - 6 p.m. The event will feature beef & chicken fajita dinners, Texas music with the Josh Ward Band as the headliner, the Turner Country Band, and both a raffle and silent auction. Organizers are looking for donations for the raffle and silent auction. Donations can be dropped off at 904 McCall Street in Conroe,2 blocks north of Hwy 105 off of Frazier. (The gray metal building with blue awning above the door.) Drop off items between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.
