Caney Creek wins opener at home against New Caney

CONROE, Texas -- The Caney Creek Panthers opened their season against the New Caney Eagles Friday night at Moorhead Stadium. While the Labor Day weekend signifies the end of summer, the blistering heat proved otherwise. However, the Panthers didn't let the heat, or the jitters of the home opener, stifle them as they rolled over the Eagles 35 -14.
Caney Creek's Robert Gordon scored first and Christian Alvarez's point after took the Panthers to a 7-0 lead with just over four minutes to play in the first quarter. Just a few minutes into the second quarter, Gordon threw a beautiful pass to John Lamb for a 60-plus yard touchdown, giving the Panthers a 14-0 lead. Once the Panthers settled into this groove for the night, it was hard to touch either their offense or defense.
New Caney's Rodolfo Noyola ran up the middle for a touchdown and the Eagles tacked on two extra points at the end of the second quarter, but the Eagles left too much time on the clock, and the Panthers quickly responded when Chris Coffer ran in another touchdown. Coffer, a junior, was named last year's 18-4A Newcomer of the Year.
After the half, the Panthers kept their momentum, and Gordon ran in a short one yard touchdown. Coffer had the Panther Nation on their feet after an explosive 80-yard run into the end-zone. The Eagles wanted one more taste of the end-zone before the night was over and Cody Young was the one who found it.
Caney Creek players and coaches relished in the night's win but quickly turned their attention to next week's Thursday night game against Porter.
