CONROE, Texas -- Students at Sacred Heart Catholic School in Conroe are jumping at the chance to fight heart disease and stroke, our nation’s No. 1 and No. 3 killers. Sacred Heart recently hosted its annual Jump Rope for Heart event raising over $12,500 for the American Heart Association, which funds lifesaving heart and stroke research and community and educational programs for youth across the country.

“We are thrilled to see all of our students get so excited and involved in the fundraiser for the American Heart Association,” said Principal Deb Brown. “What a wonderful service opportunity to give our children and help teach them how much they contribute today can help themselves as well as others now and in the future.”

According to the American Heart Association, Jump Rope for Heart teaches students how physical fitness benefits the heart and shows them that volunteering can be a fun and positive experience for the whole community. Kids are literally jumping into a heart healthier life while becoming passionate about raising money for other kids with sick hearts.

Sacred Heart physical education teacher and program coordinator Laura Landry added, “We are so fortunate to have the program available to us to help build awareness that we can all benefit from for heart health and education. Teaching our kids the importance of living a healthy lifestyle and building their knowledge about helping others at the same time is a big win for Sacred Heart and all of the communities that get to participate in the Jump Rope for Heart program.”

According to Landry, the students have been talking about nothing but Jump Rope for Heart for two weeks, raising funds and earning rewards themselves for reaching personal and team goals within the jump rope competition. Each level reached comes with a new incentive including a lanyard that collects small rubber ducks with each level. Levels include t-shirts, jump ropes, kick-balls, walkie-talkies and much more.

Landry said, “We are so proud of our students for really getting into the meaning behind the program and we are looking forward to presenting the money raised to the American Heart Association.”

Celebrating 35 years, Jump Rope for Heart has raised more than $810 million for the fight against heart disease and stroke. Millions of students have jumped rope or shot hoops and learned about heart health and how nutrition and physical activity can help prevent heart disease and stroke. Jump Rope/Hoops for Heart is co-sponsored by the American Heart Association and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
