CONROE, Texas - Approximately twenty miles south of Conroe, Spring, Texas, is trying to lay claim to the title “Donut Capital of the World” with over a dozen donut shops within a 2-mile radius. Conroe boasts of having just as many, so there’s no fear of a donut shortage on National Donut Day.

Celebrate the tradition with a donut.

It may surprise you to know that the Salvation Army is responsible for declaring the first Friday in June as National Donut Day (or National Doughnut Day), not one of the major donut shop chains. A tribute to the women who kept up the soldiers’ morale during wartime by serving donuts and coffee to the troops returning from the front lines, the first were reported to be Salvation Army volunteers in France during World War I. The Red Cross adopted this tradition during World War II. The women of both volunteer organizations were referred to as 'Doughnut Dollies.'

It was over a quarter of a century after that war began, that the day was officially declared in 1938, and it’s still being celebrated over three quarters of a century later.

Although some national chains are participating in a free donut give-away, it is at the discretion of the owner of the franchise, so inquire within. Regardless whether you get a free donut or not, celebrate the organizations and honor their volunteers by indulging in a donut. The list of Conroe donut shops is plentiful…
