The Woodlands Bar Association awards 2015 Future Lawyer Scholarships

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas - The Woodlands Bar Association (WBA) recently selected two outstanding high school seniors from Montgomery County to receive $1,500 college scholarships as part of their 2015 Future Lawyers Scholarship Program. Amanda Lawson of Montgomery High School received The Future Lawyers Scholarship in Memoriam Kevin T. Shea and Jacquilyn Chambers of Caney Creek High School was awarded The Future Lawyers Scholarship in Memoriam Ida G. Stuart.
“We are pleased that we can help local students turn their dreams of practicing law into a reality,” said Kirby Hopkins, president of the WBA. “Now in its third year, the scholarship program recognizes and encourages a spirit of community involvement and good citizenship among area high school students and allows the Woodlands Bar Association to support the next generation of young lawyers in our community.”
The scholarship recipients were chosen by a committee of attorneys based on the following criteria: financial need, academic achievement, community involvement and a strong desire to pursue a legal career.
Amanda Lawson is no stranger to success at Montgomery High School. She currently ranks in the top 10 percent of her graduating class of 450 students and earned the academic distinctions of AP Scholar, National Merit Commended Scholar, National Achievement Finalist and Academic Letterman. Throughout high school, Lawson participated in numerous community service projects and school clubs including the debate team, Superintendent’s Leadership Committee and the marching band, where she is the Drum Major.
Lawson has been accepted to New York University, University of Michigan, University of Rochester and University of Texas (Honors). She has chosen to attend New York University where she plans to major in Political Science.
Jacquilyn Chambers is a National Honor Society member and Academic Letterman, so it’s no surprise that she ranks in the top 5 percent of her graduating class of 345 students. In between studies, she has found time to log more than 200 hours of community service and get involved in activities such as the debate team, Varsity cheerleading squad, where she serves as captain, and band. Although Chambers received acceptance letters from both Texas A&M University and the University of Texas, she plans on studying at Texas A&M University in the fall, pursuing a degree in Strategic Communication/Political Science. Chambers hopes to attend Tulane University Law School for her J.D. She most recently interned at the law firm of Knighton & Stone, PLLC, in The Woodlands.
The non-profit Woodlands Bar Association was founded in 2006 to promote and develop the legal profession in The Woodlands, to provide networking and continuing legal education opportunities for its members and to provide community service in areas where the members of the Association can use their unique legal skills to provide service to others. Its 372 members include judges, private practice attorneys from both large and small law firms, and corporate attorneys.
In 2016, the scholarship amount will double from $1,500 each to $3,000 each. For information about applying for the 2016 Future Lawyer Scholarship, send an email to VPScholarships@woodlandsbarassociation.com.
