THE WOODLANDS, Texas - A topping out ceremony was held at the site of the new Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital on Aug. 13, signifying that its final height has been reached. A construction tradition, “topping out” marks the conclusion of the steelwork for the 470,000 square-foot hospital building.

“Commemorating this important milestone provided the opportunity for Vaughn Construction and Houston Methodist Hospital leadership to acknowledge the excellent work of the building planners and construction tradesmen on this project, which is on schedule to be completed in 2017,” said Debbie Sukin, regional senior vice president and chief executive officer of Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital.

Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital is on a 59-acre campus and located at the intersection of Hwy 242 and Interstate 45. Initially, the hospital will have 193 in-patient beds and a master plan for 400 beds. Construction includes a 150,000-square-foot medical office building, which is scheduled to open in February 2016.

Sukin said the hospital will include a grand entrance atrium, elevator core, and shell space for future physician tenants. The new hospital and medical office building was designed by Page Southerland Page, Inc., to maximize the aesthetic balance of the campus by utilizing a warm-toned brick and cream-colored arriscraft, a manufactured limestone, she said. The atrium and canopy will feature a white, metal panel as a gable element.

“We see the growth in The Woodlands as a great opportunity to grow our system,” said Sid Sanders Houston Methodist's senior vice president of facilities, planning and construction. “Everything that we build here today is a lasting monument to healing that is going to touch and affect the lives of patients for generations to come."

Houston Methodist The Woodlands will be the eighth in the Houston Methodist system, offering The Woodlands community a full-service, acute care hospital with many of the same services as Houston Methodist Hospital in the Texas Medical Center. The $380 million campus will be modeled after Houston Methodist West Hospital near Katy.

“We are excited to be here in The Woodlands and to bring our special brand of leading medicine to our residents. I’m deeply passionate about continuing to evolve the definition of a community hospital by raising the bar for health care delivery in this community,” Sukin said.
