Vehicle Registration for Out-of-State Residents


 New Texas residents are required to have their vehicles inspected within 30 days and a Texas driver's license within 90 days of moving to Texas.

For Vehicle Registration, your vehicle must pass the Texas state inspection before you will be allowed to have it registered  and titled.

Once your vehicle has passed the state inspection, go to your local Texas Department of Motor Vehicles to have your motor vehicle registered. 

Be sure to bring the following items with you to register your motor vehicle:

  • Proof of Texas state inspection on ALL motor vehicles
  • Completed Form 130-U
  • Acceptable Proof of Liability (Texas Auto Insurance) on ALL vehicles
  • Odometer readings on all motor vehicles less than 10 years old
  • Original out-of-state-title, proof of registration, proof of sales tax payment or current foreign/military ownership documentation
  • Social Security Card (Actual Card)
  • Certified Copy of Birth Certificate (Registrar's Copy, not the Hospital Copy) OR Valid U.S. Passport ORCertificate of Naturalization (Original Document)
  • If you are not a citizen of the U.S., you will be required to show proof of current immigration status
