CONROE, TX -- It was a Thursday, and I had just come back from East Montgomery County expecting to make a quick salad, and write up a piece of a new massive D&B style arcade that I found in east county New Caney, but then in my kitchen I got distracted. I saw a flyer from ‘EGGS UP GRILL,’ the restaurant off of FM 3083 at the Conroe Marketplace, located on the Interstate 45 feeder; and it had a hamburger on it. Truly, it looked pretty tasty, and I sometimes grow tired of salads. So as I drove the one exit over, I was still trying to process ‘a burger, at a breakfast place?’ I had never been to Eggs Up before, so why not?

It was about 1:25pm, which was nearing the tail end of their day to close up, so I just snuck in. The restaurant has a bright and friendly feel to it, as well as having an appearance of being a very uplifting place, complete with white and calming blue walls that gas stations and restaurants in the 1960s researched to best keep customers in a peaceful state-of-mind. Allie, my waitress, seated me, and I saw the little sign near the condiments on the table, pointed to it, and said, “I’d like to try the burger special.” It turned out to be EGGS UP GRILL’s ‘Great American Cheeseburger,’ one of their promotions that they run occasionally.

I asked to see the breakfast menu while I waited, and they were serious about the most important meal of the day. I’ll definitely have to try it one day; but for now, it was lunch, well a little late, but still lunch. The cheeseburger arrived, with some crispy seasoned fries. I was surprised at its size for a $10 buck special, with two, 3 plus ounce steak burger patties, stacked with the traditional American burger fare between a Brioche bun, with the lettuce at the bottom. I had brought the flyer with me, packed in with my reMarkable Pro Move tablet, and noted to myself how close the burger in the advertisement actually looked to the real thing on my plate. I soon learned the lettuce, which had a purpose, was stacked below the two patties, acting as a moisture barrier to prevent a soggy bottom bun. I also received their ‘Burger Sauce,’ which was just released a few days ago to accompany their burgers, and I say use it. Slap that stuff on all layers even before taking that first bite. I even used it on my fries.

For such a clean restaurant, Eggs Up’s cheeseburger is beautifully messy, so take precautions if you have to go back to work, after all it is a weekday special. It’s extremely juicy, a dead giveaway to the patties not being cooked to the texture of a brick. Instead, the meat is perfectly pink in the middle, yielding for tons of flavor, and with that burger sauce, it’s amped up. And although they gave me a steak knife, I opted to hold it like a man. Truthfully, when taking notes about food, I write with my clean, right hand, and eat solely with my left. And with the juiciness, I had to keep adding napkins to keep the moisture away, which is truly the best indicator of a great burger experience.

You will find that with EGGS UP GRILL’s ‘Great American Cheeseburger,’ it can’t be put down. And coupled with the fries, it’s a meal that hits the spot. But don’t wait for lunch to try Eggs Up Grill, because breakfast is still the premier meal to start off the morning.

The EGGS UP GRILL at 2816 Interstate 45 N. in Conroe, is the only location in the Houston region, along with several locations near Austin, and a restaurant in Dallas.
