Flaming Wheel Pizzeria in Conroe: Worth The Trip
CONROE, TX -- If you are looking for pizza in Conroe that isn’t big box related, there is a little pizza shop located just off FM 3083, on Longmire Road, placed right for those heading to Lake Conroe and all points beyond after a long day’s work or to hang out with friends. It’s located amongst a cluster of strip centers and business offices that are helping Conroe grow, and ‘The Flaming Wheel Pizzeria’ has the right combination of ingredients that I look for in the formation of a great crust and toppings. Guatemala born owner, Chef Thelma Portillo, was trained in California, and Italy, before making her way to Texas. The theme of her business is the ‘wheel,’ and she has her original restaurant, ‘The Wheel Kitchen’ in Tomball.
I tried a 8-inch small personal pizza with half-pepperoni and sausage/salami, which are two of their best selling flavors. The presentation was great, and right off the bat with the first bite, I recognized the crust as exceptional, and when I asked the manager, Jessica, I was right. The Flaming Wheel does in fact use the Italian ‘OO’ organic flour that’s imported from The Boot, which is the best, and once you go there, you can’t go back.
The pepperoni is a combo of cup-and-char and regular pepperonis, all Italian imported. Bingo. The Calabrian sausage, which is sliced, and spicy, plus its unique in not being crumbled, but coupled with thin slivers of Italian salami for added flavor.
The pizza oven, to me, belongs in its own YouTube Steampunk video. The gas/electric oven heats the stone, and the stone is now well seasoned with three years of pizza crusts, that allows for that perfect char on the crust you expect on a great pizza, in both the bottom and side. The juices on the parchment will have you sopping up the flavor with the remaining crust, and don’t forget that ranch dressing.
Following your pizza pie, you might want to try one of the Flaming Wheel’s desserts. I tried one of their cannolis, which is incredible, and you might be tempted to let it sit on your palate to enjoy the sensation for a few extra seconds. TFWP sells sweet 8-inch caramelized apple and nutella strawberry pizzas, all designed to yearn for your sweet tooth.
The Flaming Wheel is welcoming. If you get bored of looking at your phone, catch one of the games on one of the big screens, or perhaps a cooking show on the other. TFWP is located at 1905 Longmire Rd, Suite A4, in Conroe.
