CONROE, Texas – Conroe High School quarterback Stedman Bell threw two touchdown passes Friday and kicker Cordell Vogel drilled a 28-yard field goal as the Tigers claimed a 30-28 victory over Aldine at Buddy Moorhead Stadium.

Bell threw scoring strikes of 4 and 5 yards to Derrick Wagoner and Lamar Hernandez respectively. He finished with 186 yards passing (16-22-0) and also added 28 rushing yards on 13 carries.

Bell completed passes to six different receivers. Larry Day, who rushed for 58 yards, including a 10-yard touchdown run that opened the scoring, was also the Tigers’ leading receiver. Day had 55 receiving yards on five catches.

Karl Smith and Markelle Lee made three receptions each, good for 38 and 14 yards in order. Hernandez added two catches for 47 yards and Connor Greer, who rushed for 45 yards on six carries, came up with two pass receptions for an additional 28 yards.

The Tigers trailed 14-7 at the quarter before Kurt Lynch returned an interception 20 yards for a touchdown early in the second quarter. Neal Sharpless booted his second of three PAT kicks to tie the game 14-14.

The teams went to halftime still tied 21-21 and Conroe held a slim 27-21 lead entering the fourth quarter. Aldine regained the lead 28-27 midway through the fourth quarter but Vogel tacked on the game-winning field goal with just over five minutes remaining.

The Tigers (1-2) visit Clear Lake for a 7 p.m. Friday game at Clear Creek ISD Veterans Memorial Stadium. It’s the final tune-up before District 14-5A play begins.

The Caney Creek High School football team opened District 18-4A play on Friday with a 28-14 loss at Willis.

The hosting Wildkats jumped out to a 14-0 lead after one quarter on a 44-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Lofton Bean to Dillon Bauer and a 12-yard touchdown run by Bean.

Caney Creek rallied in the third quarter on touchdown runs of 3 and 43 yards from Jeremy Collins and Cole Streeter respectively to close to within 21-14 heading into the fourth quarter.

Bean threw 7 yards to Bauer for the Wildkats’ score.

But Willis tacked on the clincher with five minutes to play in the game. Jerrid Deveraux dashed 27 yards to paydirt.

First downs were even at 18-18 and Willis outgained the Panthers by only 20 yards (334-314). But four Caney Creek turnovers were key.

Streeter led all rushers with 154 yards on 20 carries while Collins added 80 yards on 19 tries.
