Football: Conroe, Caney Creek drop district games

CONROE, Texas – Conroe High School football quarterback Stedman Bell passed and rushed for 316 yards and a touchdown on Friday at Buddy Moorhead Stadium against rivals The Woodlands Highlanders.
But it wasn’t enough. The Woodlands claimed a 56-28 victory in the District 14-5A opener for both teams.
The Caney Creek High School football team also found themselves involved in a high-scoring game as well, on Friday, falling 63-35 at Bryan Rudder.
The Panthers (1-4, 0-3) will host the Magnolia Bulldogs at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Buddy Moorhead Stadium.
The Conroe Tigers (1-4, 0-1) will travel to Bryan to face the Vikings in a District 14-5A game at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
The Tigers look for more production from quarterback Stedman Bell, who has now thrown for more than 1,000 yards for the season.
He threw to six different receivers on Friday in going 15-for-23 for 233 yards, including an 11-yard touchdown pass to Darius Nelms for Conroe’s first score of the night. Nelms finished with 51 yards on four pass receptions.
Larry Day, who rushed for 58 yards and a touchdown on nine carries, also caught four passes for 43 yards. Devondric Smith had a productive night as well, rushing for 59 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries while also adding 34 receiving yards on three catches.
Lamar Hernandez totaled 70 yards on two pass receptions and Markelle Lee added two catches for 40 yards.
