Plan Today for Summer Break: The Woodlands Learningrx Suggests Students Spend Time Problem Solving
THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- Summer may be a time for students to have fun in the sun, but it is also a great time to plan an attack on learning difficulties.
"A break from school does not mean a child’s brain has to go on vacation too," according to Kim Bellini, owner and director of The Woodlands LearningRx.
"Summer is a great time for students to build their minds," she explained.
“Students often lose much of what they learned the previous year during the summer,” Bellini said. “Keeping students’ minds active during the long break can give them a jump start on the next school year.”
She suggests making the most of extra free time by improving cognitive skills – getting children up to speed when they return to the classroom next fall, Bellini added.
For instance, parents can encourage their children to read by making a summer reading list and forming a family book club.
“If your children are struggling to read or having trouble with math, that’s a problem that needs to be addressed,” Bellini said. “The best time to tackle learning difficulties is during the summer. If you don’t fix those problems now, you can bet they’ll be back next year.”
Bellini said parents might find it easier to help their children during the summer months, when sports and other extracurricular activities are not taking up all their free time.
“Summer is just a good time to make a commitment,” she said. “Instead of finding camps just to fill up the time, fill your child’s time with a purpose."
Bellini says that local camps and day care centers can reinforce the job parents do at home. The Woodlands LearningRx, for example, offers a customized course for individual students that can strengthen specific cognitive skills.
“Our 12-week course fits perfectly into the summer months,” Bellini said. “Sign up today and plan ahead for a smart summer.”
