The costs to attend college are rising every year. According to CollegeBoard.com, the average price of tuition and fees is currently more than $7,600 a year for public universities, soaring to $27,000 annually for private schools.
“When parents are preparing to make that type of investment in their child’s higher education, there are steps they can take much earlier to ensure the college experience is successful,” Kim Bellini, owner and director of The Woodlands LearningRx, said.
One of the top priorities at the brain-training center is making sure that children reach their full potential, she explained.
“College is definitely part of that equation,” she said. “We want to do what we can to help families prepare.”
Bellini suggests that parents invest in the following tools before their children head to the university:
• Test prep materials. There are a number of ways to prepare for standardized tests like the SAT and ACT – from online courses to workbooks, and even mobile apps.
• Tutoring. If your child missed an academic concept, Bellini said spending time reviewing that material with a tutor is a smart idea. A tutor can make a major difference for a child who needs to review specific lessons from the school year.
• Academic summer camps. For teens who want to keep their minds sharp year-round, she recommends attending a camp over the summer that is focused on science, math or writing.
• Pre-college programs. There are often on-campus programs that offer an academic advantage – like Advanced Placement classes or early college high schools. Look into ways your child can earn transferrable college credit before even graduating high school.
• Cognitive skills training. Building strong cognitive skills helps teens process and retain information – at school, work and in general. By identifying weak skills, trainers can create programs to help strengthen a student’s ability to understand concepts, build and retain information, and sharpen memory.
“Look for whatever academic boost your child needs to prepare for college – and make the investment now,” Bellini said. “If there are academic problems present, it’s best to address the situation before students face their challenging university years.”
