Children’s Books on Wheels participates in Smithsonian presentation

THE WOODLANDS, Texas – A nationwide photography competition featured some local talent that was showcased at a recent reception in Washington, D.C., said Rita Wiltz, executive director of Children’s Books on Wheels, a non-profit organization devoted to building education, health and financial literacy.
“I had the amazing opportunity to attend the reception at the Smithsonian Art Gallery with Johnny Jones of the Tamina Community in Conroe,” she said.
The presentation featured a photo of him taken by Marti Corn for the Outwin 2016: American Portraiture Today photography competition. The photo will be on display at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery throughout the rest of the year.
The competition is named for Virginia Outwin Boochever, a former Portrait Gallery volunteer whose generous gift endowed this program. From 2,500 entries from all across the country, 50 finalists are chosen to have their works displayed. The private reception was part of a three-day celebration featuring gatherings and book signings.
“I am so proud of Marti and Johnny,” said Wiltz. “The Texans were in town to represent, and the rest of D.C. knew it. It was an honor to attend with dozens of friends and family in our group who came together for the celebration.”
