Holiday shopping can be a painful endeavor, but this year Houston-based artist Anne-Joëlle Galley is making things a lot easier.

Galley has created a line of wearable art, designing accessories using her internationally celebrated paintings.

Available at annejoelledesigns.com, the line of scarves and handbags make a unique gift for the people on your list who appreciate art. Custom-made shoes and blouses are on the horizon as well.

“This holiday season you can skip the lines, support the arts and give a truly unique gift,” Galley said.

She began using her paintings as the basis to design accessories, because she wanted to offer people beautiful art they can actually carry with them.

“It is hard for someone to share the art on their walls with others,” Galley said. “I want to make the connection between art and wearing art. I think my designs are very attractive and wearable. This is a fusion between art and fashion.”

Her art has always been rooted in her love of color, which first captured her imagination as a child growing up in Mexico.

“Go to a market in Mexico, there is so much color everywhere,” she said. “There are arts and crafts and textiles everywhere, bright pinks and oranges and reds. Even the houses are all painted very different shades. Everywhere you look there is a perpetual intensity of color.”

Her first scarf, a print called, “Red Roses,” was from a piece she felt translated well to fashion.

“The second design was very emotional,” said Galley. “It’s from a painting I did for my dad, which he really loved. I knew the mix of colors would be great as a scarf. Now it’s the anchor of the collection.”

The success of her first collection of seven scarves soon led to the creation of a second set, featuring three scarves. “The second collection is on a heavier silk,” Galley said. “It’s a little bit more abstract, a little more modern.”

Galley’s next move was into handbags. She continues to follow whatever intuitively feels like the next step to her.

“It is always a natural evolution into the next thing,” she said. “I am always going on to the next idea. It was natural to do the handbags next. Eventually, I’m thinking about doing blouses.”

It’s a labor of love, with each new spark of inspiration taking considerable time and work to see to fruition.

“It takes a long time to find the textiles and manufacturing,” she said. “It’s a process. I want everything to be hand-finished, and the printing and sewing to be high quality. If you’re going to be wearing something you can call art you want it to be exceptional.”

She points out that as a gift, her items are special because they are rare and uncommon.

“These are very original, limited edition pieces,” she said. “There won’t be many other people in the world with the same thing. Each of these are very personal to me, they are unique. Instead of just buying someone a scarf, you can buy them a piece of art they can wear.”
