CONROE, TX -- The National Weather Service Houston/Galveston is reporting a very cold air mass that will plunge into SE Texas over the next few days. A prolonged period of well below freezing temperatures is expected in most locations within Montgomery County and record cold temperatures are likely in many spots across Texas on Monday night and into Tuesday. These cold temperatures may bring with it chances of snow, sleet and /or freezing rain. With this forecast, all City offices will be closed on Monday, 2/15 and Tuesday, 2/16.

Still uncertain is how extreme the cold will be and how much and what type of precipitation will occur but the potential of significant impacts from both hard freeze and snow/ice is likely. Travel Monday Night through Tuesday will likely be hazardous so please do not plan to travel if possible. Pipes may freeze, burst and cause damage to infrastructure so precautions should be taken to prevent damage. Wrap exposed pipes, shut off irrigation systems, and drip faucets to prevent freezing of pipes. Ice accumulation, wind and power demand could lead to power outages. Have a safety plan in place in case of power outages. Use only heaters that are approved for inside of homes. Do not run gas fueled generators inside of closed spaces such as garages or inside of homes. They produce Carbon Monoxide and it is a colorless and odorless killer. If you are going to use a gas fueled heater, make sure you have a carbon monoxide detector.

Mayor, Council and city personnel are monitoring the situation closely and will be posting updates on the city website, www.CityofConroe.org, as the situation develops.
