MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TEXAS -- Conroe ISD partnered with Memorial Hermann The Woodlands to give heart screenings, to all incoming 7th through 12th grade extra-curricular participants that must have a physical prior to participation for $15.00. However, if cost was a barrier, students were asked to contact the campus trainer to receive information about grants available through the Cody Stephens Foundation (codystephensfoundation.org).

The District believes heart screenings are important because of the risk of sudden cardiac arrest. Many of the deaths associated with sudden cardiac arrest are due to an unrecognized heart condition that may have been detected through a simple and non-invasive examination called an electrocardiogram (ECG). An electrocardiogram checks for problems with the electrical activity of the heart. The heart screenings were administered by Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital Cardiology Department staff. The Memorial Hermann Medical Group Cardiology physician staff read and analyzed the test results.

The first screening was held at Memorial Hermann Ironman Sports Medicine Institute in The Woodlands on Saturday, April 26. One hundred thirteen students were screened. The second tests were available this past Saturday at Conroe High School. A total of 135 students received screenings. The last screening will take place on Saturday, August 16 at 9am at Memorial Hermann Ironman Sports Medicine Institute. This screening is open to all 7th through 12th grade extra-curricular students in surrounding school districts.
