Soccer: Conroe falls to The Woodlands

CONROE, Texas – The District 14-5A season kicked off on Tuesday for both the Conroe High School boys’ and girls’ soccer teams. Unfortunately, both teams raised the curtain against district favorites The Woodlands.
The Conroe Tigers (8-1-2, 0-1) suffered their first loss of the season when the Highlanders (7-1-2, 1-0) scored second-half goals in the 59th and 62nd minutes to break open a scoreless tie and claim a 2-0 victory at Buddy Moorhead Stadium.
The Tigers were coming off of impressive victories over Baytown Sterling (4-0), Jersey Village (3-1) and Aldine Eisenhower (5-0).
Nicholas Cutaia scored twice on Sterling while Wilker Matute added a goal and an assist. Emmy Orioha also scored a goal and Stephen Velez, Jose Luis Sanchez and Bryan Burkitt contributed with assists.
Sanchez scored all three goals on Jersey Village with assists from Ivan Adame, Velez and Cutaia, and added two goals and a pair of assists on Eisenhower as well. Edwin Vargas and Wilmer Burgos contributed assists.
The Conroe Tigerettes opened district play on Tuesday with a 3-0 loss at The Woodlands.
The Tigerettes host Bryan at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Buddy Moorhead Stadium.
