The Conroe High School girls’ basketball team will compete in the 5th Annual Lady Bear Varsity Classic, Thursday through Saturday, hosted by the Montgomery High School girls’ basketball team.

The Tigerettes are one of 16 teams in the tournament. They take on New Caney Porter at 2 p.m. Thursday at the ninth-grade campus.

The two teams played in a regular season game on Saturday with Conroe snapping a five-game skid with a 49-25 victory at home. Jane Shute and Reagan Magee (four steals) scored 10 and nine points respectively to lead the offense. Both also had four rebounds.

Ten Conroe players scored points in the game. Courtney Boatright (five rebounds, four steals) finished with six points while Lauren George and Erica Powell (three assists) added five points each. Zakenja Buchanan (seven rebounds) and Erica Solomon-Powell contributed four points apiece and Payton Powell scored three points and grabbed three rebounds.

Angie Flores (five assists, three steals) and Alexis Frazier (three rebounds, three steals) rounded out the scoring column with two and one point respectively while Michesha Williams grabbed six rebounds and Olivia Iniguez added two more. Alexis Lewis contributed a rebound and a steal.

The Tigerettes won their first three games of the 2012-13 season before the recent slide.

But Conroe hopes to swing the momentum its way again at the Montgomery Tournament. The Tigerettes follow Thursday’s meeting with Porter by taking on either Klein Forest or Channelview at 3:30 p.m. Friday.

Other teams in Conroe’s bracket include Spring, Cy-Woods, new District 14-5A foe A&M Consolidated, and Concordia Lutheran.

The opposite bracket features district foe Oak Ridge along with hosts Montgomery, Magnolia West, The John Cooper School, New Caney, C.E. King, Madisonville and Cy-Ridge.

The tournament championship game is set for 2 p.m. Saturday.
