CONROE, Texas – The Conroe High School girls’ basketball team has completed one round of District 14-5A play and must wait until Friday’s results to find out just where its stands.

The Tigerettes completed the first round with a 52-45 victory over Oak Ridge at Porter Gym. Conroe finished the first round with a 2-4 district mark (10-13 overall) and could begin the final round in a three-way tie for fourth place pending the outcome of Friday’s Oak Ridge (1-4) vs. A&M Consolidated (2-3) game.
An Oak Ridge victory would cause the tie. At worst, the Tigerettes start the final round of district play just a game behind A&M Consolidated for the fourth and final playoff spot.
The Woodlands leads the district with a 5-0 mark while College Park and Lufkin each remain a game behind at 4-1.
Conroe held the upper hand from the opening tip against Oak Ridge, holding a 12-10 lead at the quarter. The Tigerettes extended the advantage to 30-23 by halftime before Oak Ridge trimmed the margin to 41-34 after three quarters.
Lauren George and Reagan Magee led a balanced scoring attack with 10 points each and Erica Powell added nine more. Angie Flores and Jane Schute contributed with six points apiece and Courtney Cassidy finished with five points.
The Tigerettes begin second-round action with a crucial 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, encounter at A&M Consolidated.
Meanwhile the Caney Creek High School girls’ basketball team won three of four games, including a 60-31 District 18-4A victory at home over Willis. The surging Lady Panthers got 18 points from Jessica Twardowski and 17 more from Meris Walls in the second-round opener in district play. Paige Selph contributed with eight points.
The Lady Panthers evened their record at 12-12 for the season and improved to 3-6 in district play with the recent streak that included victories over Waller (59-47) and Tomball Memorial (31-22). A 76-33 victory over Tarkington, dating back to the Livingston Tournament, gives Caney Creek four victories over its last six games.
Caney Creek visits Montgomery for a 6 p.m. Friday game.
